RESILENCY - DT CASE STUDY

The Euro Cup, a prestigious football tournament held every four years since 1960, is hosted by Germany in 2024 edition. DT customer is responsible for hosting, and the backbone of their broadcasting infrastructure is provided by you -"SB&A" through Comcast.

Every member of CVP/SBA has made considerable efforts to ensure a resilient environment:

  • Migration to EKS(Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service) for most DT-impacted services.
  • Proactive capacity review in collaboration with Ops-SRE for Pre-Scaling for anticipated traffic.

And here comes another significant step which team took care in short notice to strengthen the resiliency of the system. Let’s first examine what kind of challenges customers may face during the live matches.

CHALLENGES:

There are many chances of malicious attempts disrupting normal traffic to a targeted server, service, or network through a flood of Internet traffic, known as a DDoS attack. Despite our services being resilient and capable of handling high traffic, such malicious activity could prevent actual users from accessing highly anticipated matches. Currently, our services rely on CLB to distribute traffic, which may lack sophistication and require additional effort to mitigate such malicious traffic effectively

SOLUTION:

The experts from CVP(Architect-Augustine, SRE-Vasanth, Engineers) have suggested to migrate the services from CLB to ALB to mitigate this attack.

BENEFITS:
  • ALBs are better suited for defending against sophisticated application-layer DDoS attacks.
  • It provides detailed insights into the traffic, allowing for more precise filtering and mitigation techniques.
  • ALB allows defining of WAF rules to prevent unauthorised bots and IPs from reaching the application layer.
  • ALB enables AWS Shield Advance, which detects and alerts on DDoS attacks.

Babylon, Artemis & Rhodes teams rose to the occasion and successfully implemented ALB for their services: CAPEWS, Widevine, Fairplay, LWS, Selector in record time of two weeks. This proactive upgrade demonstrates our commitment in providing a resilient and seamless experience for viewers during EURO 2024.
